Bach: D-moll toccata és fúga

A toccata műfaj neve az olasz toccare (érinteni, billenteni) szóból ered. Jellemzően klaviatúrás hangszerekre írt virtuóz futamokkal és gyors figurákkal tűzdelt, fantáziaszerű műfaj.

A fúga a legmagasabb rendű polifon imitációs műfaj, a szó jelentése (futás, kergetőzés) az egymás utánzó szólamok sorban való belépésére utal.

The name of the toccata genre ensue the Italian word toccare (touch, tilt). This is a typical genre of keyboards, in this genre, the composer often use virtuoso roulade and very fast motives. The toccata is a fantasy-like genre.
The fuge is the most advanced genre of the polyfonic music. The word "fugue" means run, chase, which implys the entry of the one after another part in the piece.

Mai zenénk Alessandro Scarlatti egyik tokkátája csembalóra. A tokkáta műfaja egyáltalán nem számít ritkaságnak, igen kedvelték a barokk korban, amikor is rengeteg tokkátát írtak mind orgonára, mind csembalóra. De a későbbi korokban is előszeretettel írtak tokkátákat, ekkor már az orgona mellett inkább zongorára. A tokkáta egyébként általában virtuóz futamokkal és gyors figurákkal tűzdelt szabad formájú, fantáziaszerű kompozíció, ami arra vezethető vissza, hogy az első ilyen műveket csembalóra írták. A csembalóról tudni illik, hogy a megszolaltott hang igen gyorsan elhal, ezért a csembalóművek szinte mindig erősen figuráltak, a hosszabban tartott akkordok esetén a arpeggio a csembaló természetes játékmódja. Ezek megfigyelhetők a mai zeneművünkben is, ami Scarlatti G-moll toccatája, csembalóra.
